Oak, Pin hardwood containers

Quercus palustris

Description

Hardwood containers are grown for conservation plantings on smaller acreages. They are grown in containers that are 2 5/8 inches in diameter and 10 inches long. These seedlings are $5.00 each and are only available in flats of 25 per species. The minimum order is 25 trees. A flat of 25 costs $125. FRC does not ship containerized seedlings. Containerized seedlings must be picked up at FRC.

The Pin Oak tree is characterized by its stately and symmetrical shape, with a short trunk and grayish-brown, deeply furrowed bark. Its glossy leaves turn red, orange, and gold in the fall.

Pin Oak can grow up to 80-90 feet tall and 50-70 feet wide at maturity, with a wide range of growth rates. It prefers a humid climate with moderate temperatures and ample rainfall. It can tolerate hot summers and cold temperatures.

Pin Oak produces acorns that are about 1/2″ in size. They are an important food source for wildlife, making it a valuable tree for promoting biodiversity and creating wildlife habitats for squirrels, deer, and birds.
