Walnut, Black
Description
A large tree to 70 feet tall and a trunk to 2 feet or more, with a straight stem often clear of branches for half of its height, and an open, rounded crown of foliage. Common in rich soil of flood plain forests along streams, also in oak forests. Black walnuts are popular edible nuts as well as food for wildlife. The trees are planted for shade and shelterbelts and when large are prized for their wood.
